Building Your Foundation in Truth: Renewing Your Mind

Building Your Foundation in Truth: Renewing Your Mind

Living in the Spirit:

One of the greatest things a believer can do in the Christian life is to continually allow the Word of God to renew the mind.

When we come to Christ, God gives us a new foundation. We become new creations in Christ. Our righteousness, acceptance, identity, and relationship with God are established in Him. The foundation Christ gives us is not faulty. Yet we can have a perfect foundation in Christ while still carrying faulty patterns of thinking from our former life. This is where the renewal of the mind becomes essential.

**A Faulty Mindset Can Affect a Sound Foundation**

Many of the things we believe about ourselves, God, relationships, success, failure, money, or life were formed through our upbringing, experiences, culture, disappointments, fears, or even religious traditions. Some thoughts have been with us so long that they feel natural. But something can be familiar without being true. A believer can possess a new identity in Christ while continuing to think according to an old mindset. Paul writes, "be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). Transformation is connected to the renewing of the mind.

**Strongholds We Often Neglect**

Paul describes this battle in stronger terms: "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds... casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God" (2 Corinthians 10:4–5). We often think of spiritual warfare as confronting external opposition, yet Paul speaks directly of imaginations and thoughts that stand against the knowledge of God. A stronghold is a deeply established way of thinking so familiar we no longer recognize it as something needing to be pulled down — and often, these thoughts are not just painful but comfortable, defended rather than surrendered. The question is never "how long have I believed this?" but "does this agree with the Word of God?"

**What a Stronghold Costs Us**

A stronghold does more than distort our thinking — it denies us the practical enjoyment of what already belongs to us in Christ. God has provided peace, but a stronghold of fear keeps a believer restless. God has provided acceptance, but a stronghold of rejection keeps a believer isolated and guarded. God has provided abundant life, but a stronghold of lack keeps a believer striving instead of resting in provision. The inheritance is not withheld by God; it is hindered by an unrenewed mind still governed by an old pattern. A believer can be legally entitled to every blessing of the covenant and still live far beneath it, simply because a stronghold stands between the promise and its experience. This is why Paul does not merely ask us to add good thoughts, but to pull down what is already occupying that ground — the space must be cleared before the benefit can be walked in.

**The Word Rebuilds Our Thinking**

Suppose someone thinks, "I am rejected because of my past." The Word says we are "accepted in the beloved" (Ephesians 1:6). Suppose someone thinks, "God is constantly condemning me." The Word says, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). Suppose someone thinks, "I am still the same person I was before Christ." The Word declares, "If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature" (2 Corinthians 5:17). A stronghold is not dismissed by wishing it away; it is pulled down by confronting it with truth until something gives — even when that means surrendering a conclusion we've carried for years.

**Renewal Is Continuous**

Renewing the mind is not a one-time event but a continual process. Daily circumstances, conversations, and disappointments present thoughts that may contradict God's Word, and we must bring them under the authority of truth, asking: What has God said? Who am I in Christ? What should I believe? This is what it means to live in the Spirit — allowing truth to govern our thinking rather than letting circumstances dictate our beliefs.

**Build on the Foundation**

The foundation Christ has given us does not need repair; we need to build on it. Our thoughts, attitudes, and choices are part of that building process. Some things must be built up; others must be cast down. If we build with old ways of thinking, we hinder the practical expression of our new life in Christ. The Christian life is not about becoming what God has already made us — it is about learning to think, believe, and live according to that reality.

**Living in the Spirit**

To live in the Spirit is to let the Holy Spirit, through the Word, continually reshape our thinking. Do not protect a stronghold simply because it is familiar. Let truth replace error, faith replace fear, and God's acceptance replace rejection. The foundation is Christ. The building is your life — and one of the most important things you can continually build, and defend, is your mind.
