**Develop the Real You: Your Spirit Is Eternal**

**Living in the Spirit**

*"In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began." — Titus 1:2 (KJV)*

We live in a world that teaches us to invest almost everything in the part of us that is temporary while neglecting the part that will live forever.

From childhood we are trained to develop our minds through education and our bodies through proper care. We exercise, eat healthy food, seek medical attention, and spend time and money on our appearance. These things are good because the body is God's temple and through it man expresses the joy of living so therefore it should be cared for.

The problem is not that we care for the body. The problem is that we often neglect the spirit.

The real you is not your body. Neither are you your mind, emotions, or will. Those belong to your soul. The real you is your spirit. You are a spirit, you possess a soul, and you live in a body.

Your body is only the earthly house in which your spirit dwells. Scripture declares, "The body without the spirit is dead" (James 2:26). At death, the body returns to the dust, but the spirit continues because it is eternal.

If we truly believe this, should we not devote more attention to developing the part of us that will never die?

Your spirit is the part of you that knows God. It is through your spirit that you receive His life, understand His Word, and enjoy fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Your spirit is like Christ, thinks like Him, speaks like Him — it is your point of contact with God. It is the deepest part of your being and the part that reflects His life.

Sadly, many believers spend years strengthening their bodies and expanding their knowledge while giving little attention to their spirit. We carefully feed the body but often starve the spirit. Yet the quality of our Christian life depends more on the condition of our spirit than on the condition of our body.

A strong spirit is developed through daily fellowship with God, meditation on His Word, prayer, worship, and obedience to the Holy Spirit. As the spirit grows stronger, it influences the soul and brings the body under God's control.

Adam's story shows us why this matters.

When God created Adam, he enjoyed perfect fellowship with Him. But when Adam sinned, he died spiritually — he was separated from God. Physical death followed later, just as God had declared, "Dust you are, and to dust you shall return." From Adam onward, death reigned over humanity because all inherited his fallen nature.

Yet God did not leave mankind without hope.

The sacrifices under the Law temporarily covered sin until Jesus Christ came as the perfect sacrifice. Through His death and resurrection, He defeated sin and made eternal life available to everyone who believes.

Here is a truth every believer should remember: this present earthly life does not belong to us; it belongs to God. He is the Author and Sustainer of life. He gives it, and He determines when our earthly journey ends. None of us will be asked for permission before leaving this world. When God's appointed time comes, our spirit departs, and our body returns to the earth. Our present life is therefore a stewardship entrusted to us by God, not an absolute possession.

But eternal life is different.

God has placed that decision in our hands. Through Jesus Christ, He offers every person the gift of eternal life, but He will never force anyone to receive it. He respects the freedom He has given mankind. Once we choose Christ, the eternal life He gives can never be taken away. Our earthly life may end without our permission, but our eternal destiny will never be determined without our choice.

What an amazing demonstration of God's love and justice! He governs our temporary life according to His wisdom, yet He allows every person to choose where he or she will spend eternity.

This is why developing your spirit should be your highest priority.

Everything we build for the body is temporary. Physical strength fades. Beauty passes away. Wealth, education, achievements, and possessions cannot accompany us beyond the grave. But your spirit will live forever.

God's greatest promise is not a longer earthly life but eternal life. Titus 1:2 declares that God, who cannot lie, promised eternal life before the world began. Since eternity is God's greatest promise, preparing our spirit for eternity should be our greatest pursuit.

Care for your body. Develop your mind. Work diligently and fulfil God's purpose for your life. But above all, develop the real you.

Feed your spirit daily with God's Word. Spend time in prayer. Walk in fellowship with the Holy Spirit. The body will serve you only during this present age, but your spirit will accompany you into eternity.

Invest most in what will last forever.
