**Receiving Help from God — Part 1: Receiving Help Through Faith in the Word**

Living in the Spirit:
At the foundation of receiving help from God is one simple but powerful truth: God's help is received by trusting His Word. It is not accessed through effort, emotions, or human reasoning. It comes through faith in what God has already said.
Our anchor scripture sets the tone:
*"I will lift up my eyes to the hills — From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord…"* — Psalm 121:1–2
If our help comes from the Lord, then the question becomes: How does that help reach us? The answer is through His Word, and our faith in that Word.
**Faith for Salvation and Faith for Daily Help**
It is important to understand that while faith is always the means by which we receive from God, not every expression of faith is anchored on the same revelation of Scripture. Faith for salvation rests on the finished work of Christ — His death, burial, and resurrection. That is how we receive Him as Lord and Savior. But faith for help in specific situations rests on specific promises of God's Word that speak to that need. The nature of faith is the same. What gives it direction and substance is the Word it stands on.
**Trusting God Happens in the Heart**
*"…my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped…"* — Psalm 28:7
Notice what the psalmist said. Not simply, "I trusted in Him" — but "my heart trusted in Him." The Holy Spirit is being deliberate here. Trust is not merely a statement. It is an inward reality. It happens in the heart — in the mind — in our thoughts, reasoning, and inner focus.
This is entirely consistent with:
*"And these words…shall be in your heart."* — Deuteronomy 6:6
God's design has always been for His Word to live inside us. Why? Because trust originates from within. You do not truly trust God with your mouth alone. You trust Him when your thoughts align with what He has said.
**Faith: The Word in the Heart and on the Lips**
Romans 10 makes the pattern clear. Faith is the Word in your heart and the Word on your lips. The Word in the heart produces belief. The Word on the lips gives that belief its voice, expression and brings the help needed. This is how faith operates — not as an abstract concept, but as something Word-based and heart-rooted.
**Spiritual Mindedness Versus Carnal Thinking**
Romans 8 teaches that to be spiritually minded is life and peace, while to be carnally minded is enmity against God. To be spiritually minded, simply put, is to be Word-minded — to have your thoughts governed by what God has spoken.
This must be clearly understood. When your thoughts are dominated by fear, doubt, circumstances, and natural reasoning, you are thinking carnally. You are not in the Spirit — you are in the flesh. This is not a word of condemnation. It is a word of awareness. The one whose thought life is anchored in the Word positions himself to receive God's power and help — he is open, aligned, and available. But the one whose thoughts are governed by fear, doubt, and natural reasoning is in enmity with God, and enmity cannot receive help. You cannot be at war with God inwardly and draw from Him at the same time.
**Rejoicing Also Takes Place in the Heart**
Psalm 28:7 continues: *"…therefore my heart greatly rejoices…"*
This is significant. Trust happens in the heart. And rejoicing also happens in the heart. Joy is not merely an outward expression — it is an inward state produced by what fills your thoughts.
When God's Word fills the heart, joy is the natural result — but this is precisely where many believers lose their footing. Instead of keeping the Word as their focus and their instrument of deliverance, the natural tendency is to drift. Offences take root. Anger toward others builds. Unhappiness settles in. And before long, these distractions become the loudest voice in the heart — crowding out the Word and blocking the very flow of joy that is essential to receiving help from God. The heart cannot be joyful and angry at the same time. One must be dominant. Joy is not a luxury in this process. It is a necessity. And anything that disrupts it disrupts the help.
This is where trusting and rejoicing must go together. When you truly trust the Word, you meditate on it, you align your thoughts with it, and joy should rise organically. The Word that enters the mind must become your delight.
**A Critical Spiritual Insight**
Here is a point that is far too often overlooked: joyfulness as a temperament should be sought after more earnestly than material wealth. More than gold. More than silver. Why? Because joy alongside peace is evidence of trust and God's presence. It is the strength of the believer. It is the sign that the Word is not merely in his mind but alive in the heart. With all humility, it must be said — many have forgotten how to be joyful and they don't give it the priority it deserves. They pursue outcomes while neglecting the inner posture that actually receives from God.
**The Practical Side of Trusting God**
So how do we trust God in our hearts in a real and practical way?
**Get hold of the relevant Word.** Find the Scripture that speaks directly to your situation. That verse, that promise, that declaration — that is your anchor of faith. Start there.
**Keep the Word in your heart.** We keep the Word alive inwardly by memorizing it, reciting it within ourselves, and repeating it consciously in our thoughts. This is not mechanical repetition. It is intentional alignment.
**Meditation is the practice of trust.** To meditate on the Word is to recite it in your heart until it becomes your dominant thought — until it crowds out the noise of fear and circumstance. This is how you stay spiritually minded. This is how your inner world comes into agreement with God's truth.
**Let joy emerge from the Word.** As you meditate, something shifts. You begin to see the Word not just as a verse to remember but as your actual instrument of help. Confidence grows. And genuine, unforced joy springs up from within.
**Keeping the Word and Joy Together**
These two must never be separated. The Word produces trust. Trust produces joy. Joy strengthens faith. And faith receives help. Remove joy from the equation, and the chain is broken.
**Conclusion**
God's help is already given. But it is received through faith in His Word. To walk in that help, let the Word dwell richly in your heart. Align your thoughts with what God has declared. Reject carnal thinking before it takes root. Meditate continually. And allow joy — deep, settled, Word-born joy — to rise within you.
This is how we trust God. And this is how we receive His help.
