THE SIZE OF YOUR GOD - Part 1

# LIVING IN THE SPIRIT SERIES

### Anchor Scripture "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." — Proverbs 23:7

One of the greatest limitations in the life of a believer is not the limitation of God — it is the limitation of our thinking about God.

If you think small about God, you will live small before God.

God has not become small because your understanding of Him is small. His power has not diminished because your faith is weak. He remains infinitely greater than your circumstances, resources, understanding, and limitations.

But your perception of Him can determine how much of His reality you are willing to experience.

### God Is Bigger Than Your Circumstances

Many believers unconsciously measure God by what they currently possess.

If they have money, they believe they can accomplish something. If they have connections, they believe a door can open. If they have the necessary resources, they become confident that something can happen.

But if the money is not available, the connection is not there, and the circumstances look impossible, they conclude that nothing can be done.

This is where our thinking about God becomes too small.

God is not the size of your pocket.

Your resources do not determine God's resources.

Whether you have money or not makes no difference to God's ability to accomplish His purpose. God is not dependent upon your ability to provide what He needs before He can work in your life.

He is God.

If everything depended upon what you could provide, accomplish, or arrange by yourself, there would be little room left for the manifestation of His power.

God does not need to receive glory for what you were already capable of doing without Him. He wants your life to become a testimony of what He can accomplish through His grace and power.

### Challenge Yourself With a Faith Target

One practical way to discover how small or great your thinking about God has become is to challenge yourself with a faith target.

Ask yourself: *What would I attempt if I truly believed that nothing is impossible with God?*

Many people will never attempt anything beyond their natural capacity because they calculate everything according to what they presently have.

They ask: - "Do I have the money?" - "Do I have the connections?" - "Do I have the ability?" - "Do I have enough resources?"

But faith asks another question: "What is God asking me to believe?"

This does not mean becoming presumptuous or pursuing foolish ambitions. Faith is not pretending that every desire is God's will. Faith is learning to trust God beyond the limitations of natural circumstances when His Word and His Spirit lead us.

Jesus said: "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." — Mark 9:23

Faith moves the believer from dependence upon what is visible to confidence in the God who is invisible.

### Don't Limit God in Your Mind

One of the greatest injustices we do to ourselves is to decide beforehand what God cannot do.

We can miss opportunities to experience the power of God because we have already concluded that something is impossible.

The children of Israel demonstrated this repeatedly. Psalm 78:41 says: "They turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel."

God Himself was not limited. His power remained unlimited. But their unbelief prevented them from experiencing what God was willing and able to do among them.

Your unbelief does not make God powerless; it makes your experience of His power smaller.

Sometimes the greatest obstacle standing between us and the next thing God wants to do is not an external obstacle. It is the conclusion we have already reached internally.

### Are You Waiting on God — or Waiting on Yourself?

There are believers who have remained in the same place for years, doing the same things, thinking the same thoughts, responding to life in the same ways, and then say: "I am waiting on God."

But are you really waiting on God?

Sometimes what we call waiting on God is actually waiting for ourselves — waiting until we have enough money, enough confidence, until we understand everything, until circumstances become favorable, until we can see how everything will work out.

And while we are waiting, life continues to pass.

Perhaps God is not taking forever. Perhaps we have been waiting for ourselves to become sufficient before we trust His sufficiency.
