The True Goal of Christian Instruction

The True Goal of Christian Instruction

Living in the Spirit:

In his First Epistle to Timothy, Paul offers one of the clearest summaries of genuine Christian maturity: *"Now the goal of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith"* (1 Timothy 1:5). With these words, Paul reminds Timothy — and every believer — that Christianity is not ultimately about doctrine, arguments, spiritual gifts, or outward religious performance. The true aim of divine instruction is love — but not love in its shallow or sentimental form. It is love flowing from an inwardly transformed life.

Love From a Pure Heart

A pure heart is one that is unmixed, undefiled, sincere, and wholly directed toward God. Jesus declared, *"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God"* — making purity of heart not a minor virtue but a defining mark of those who walk with God.

Such a heart is free from hidden corruption and double-mindedness, not governed by selfish ambition, manipulation, bitterness, envy, pride, or hypocrisy. This purity is not outward moral discipline but inward transformation. Under the New Covenant, God promised, *"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you"* — a promise fully realized in the New Creation. The believer therefore does not merely strive to imitate love externally; he has received a recreated spirit capable of expressing God's own nature, for *"the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit."*

It is possible to perform outwardly good actions while the heart remains impure — giving for recognition, helping to control, serving out of pride, or showing affection while concealing resentment. Divine love, however, flows only from inward purity.

A Good Conscience

Conscience is the inward moral awareness that bears witness concerning right and wrong — an internal judge and alarm system. Paul returned to it repeatedly because it directly affects spiritual sensitivity. The conscience can accuse or excuse, condemn or approve; it can become weak, defiled, seared, or remain clear before God.

For the New Creation believer, the conscience is especially significant because the Holy Spirit communicates through the inward man. A repeatedly violated conscience dulls that sensitivity, gradually closing off the channel through which God speaks. A good conscience, by contrast, is kept clean through truth, obedience, sincerity, and alignment with God — producing inward peace, freedom from hidden guilt, and genuine responsiveness to the Spirit. Paul demonstrated this priority: *"I exercise myself always to have a conscience void of offense toward God and men."*

Love cannot mature properly where the conscience is habitually violated. A believer may appear outwardly loving while inwardly ignoring conviction, compromising truth, or tolerating hidden corruption. Over time, such love becomes distorted — emotional rather than spiritual, manipulative rather than selfless. True love must flow together with inward honesty and authentic sensitivity to the Spirit.

Sincere Faith

Sincere faith is genuine, unhypocritical faith — the Greek word literally means "without pretense." It is faith that is real inwardly, living and active, not merely religious performance or public appearance. Scripture identifies several distorted alternatives: dead faith without works, temporary faith that collapses under pressure, shipwrecked faith ruined by rejecting conscience, and feigned faith that is nothing more than pretended spirituality. Sincere faith stands apart from all of these — it is living faith produced by true union with Christ, trusting God genuinely, walking honestly, and persevering steadfastly.

The Divine Progression

Paul's three qualities form a progression with one result: mature Christian love. A pure heart means the inward nature is cleansed and yielded to God. A good conscience means the inward witness remains clear and sensitive. Sincere faith means faith stays genuine and free from hypocrisy. Together, they produce love as their natural outflow — not mere emotional kindness, but the fruit of deep inward spiritual integrity.

This aligns perfectly with New Creation realities. The New Creation believer has received a new heart, has the law of God written within, and has divine love imparted at the core of his being. Mature love is therefore not manufactured by human effort — it is the outflow of a purified inward life, a guarded conscience, and authentic faith in Christ.

When believers ignore conviction, suppress truth, or walk in hypocrisy, love becomes distorted even when outward religious activity continues. But when the inward man remains yielded to God, love flows naturally, because the believer is walking in step with the life of Christ within. Purity guards the heart, conscience guards sensitivity, sincere faith guards authenticity — and together they produce the mature love of Christ as the true goal of all Christian instruction.
