Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart (Part 2)

Living in the Spirit | Purpose Series Understanding God's Direction for Your Life
The Holy Spirit reveals the Father's thoughts concerning our individual lives. He takes what belongs to Christ and makes it known to us. He leads us into God's perfect will.
This is why our relationship with the Holy Spirit is indispensable.
Sadly, many believers have become so accustomed to making decisions based on logic, emotions, pressure, and circumstances that they seldom wait upon the Lord for His direction. We have become skilled at analyzing situations but less skilled at listening to the Spirit.
Our emotions are often too loud. Our schedules are too busy. Our minds are too occupied. As a result, we fail to recognize the gentle leading of the Holy Spirit.
Learning to wait upon Him is a discipline that must be cultivated. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit is not automatic. It grows as we spend time in prayer, meditate on God's Word, quiet our hearts, and learn to recognize His inner witness.
Everything Christ accomplished through His death and resurrection becomes a living reality in our experience through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Without Him, the blessings of redemption remain truths we admire but do not consistently experience.
The Holy Spirit is not merely an influence or a doctrine to be studied. He is a divine Person who lives within every believer. He is our Teacher, Comforter, Helper, Guide, Counselor, and Revealer of God's wisdom. No relationship in the Christian life is more important than our fellowship with Him.
King Asa provides a powerful illustration of what happens when we rely on our own understanding instead of seeking God's direction.
When Baasha, king of Israel, fortified Ramah to cut off Judah, Asa faced what appeared to be a national emergency. Rather than seeking the Lord, he relied upon political wisdom. He removed silver and gold from the treasuries of the temple and the royal palace and sent them to Ben-Hadad, king of Syria, asking him to break his treaty with Israel and attack the northern cities.
From every human perspective, Asa's strategy was brilliant. It worked exactly as planned. Baasha abandoned his military project, and Asa strengthened Judah with the abandoned building materials.
Most people would have called it a great success.
But God did not.
Through the prophet Hanani, the Lord declared : «"Because you have relied on the king of Syria, and have not relied on the LORD your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand... For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him." (2 Chronicles 16:7–9)»
Those words reveal something remarkable.
God's purpose was not merely to remove Baasha's blockade. His plan was to give the Syrian army into Asa's hand as well. Instead of gaining only temporary relief from one enemy, Asa could have experienced an even greater victory over another kingdom.
But Asa could never have imagined such a plan through human reasoning. Nothing in the natural circumstances suggested that Syria—the nation he chose as his ally—would become a defeated enemy. Such a possibility lay completely beyond human calculation.
Only God knew that purpose.
Only the Holy Spirit could have revealed it.
Asa settled for a victory that his own understanding could produce and, in doing so, forfeited the greater victory God had already prepared.
How often do we make the same mistake?
We pray for God to bless our plans instead of asking Him to reveal His plans. We settle for what seems reasonable instead of waiting for what is divine. We choose what appears safe instead of trusting the wisdom of the One whose thoughts are infinitely higher than ours.
God is able to accomplish far more than we can imagine. His plans are always greater than our own. His wisdom reaches beyond the limits of our understanding. His purposes exceed our greatest expectations.
This is why we must learn to trust Him with all our hearts. Trust Him when His direction seems different from your logic. Trust Him when His timing challenges your patience. Trust Him when His instructions stretch your faith. Trust Him enough to wait until He speaks.
The believer who learns to depend upon the Holy Spirit will continually discover that God's way is always wiser than human wisdom and His purpose is always greater than human imagination.
Let us therefore refuse to lean on our own understanding. Let us cultivate daily fellowship with the Holy Spirit, acknowledge God in every decision, and trust Him completely.
For when we do, He will direct our paths—not merely to good outcomes, but to the greater purposes He prepared for us long before we ever knew they existed.
This concludes our reflection on Proverbs 3:5–6 in the Purpose Series. May it deepen your fellowship with the Holy Spirit as you seek His direction daily. — Hassan Thomas Nenger
