# Living in the Spirit: Walking in the Reality of God's Grace

*"According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world…"* — Ephesians 1:4

God has not called us to live by human wisdom, natural strength, or our own understanding. In Christ, He has already made abundant provision for everything we need to live the life He has called us to live.

Paul writes, *"Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence"* (Ephesians 1:8). The grace of God has abounded toward us in Christ, but Paul connects this abundance of grace with wisdom and spiritual understanding. The provision of grace must not remain merely a theological truth we believe—it must become a reality we experience in our daily walk.

## Grace Must Become Practical

The Greek word translated "prudence" in Ephesians 1:8 is *phronēsis*, carrying the idea of practical wisdom—the ability to apply knowledge rightly. God's wisdom is not merely information; it teaches us how to live.

There is a difference between knowing that God's grace has been abundantly supplied and knowing how to walk in the reality of that grace. Grace provides. Spiritual understanding enables us to recognize what has been provided and how to walk in it. God can make provision for us, but if we do not understand His ways, we may fail to walk in what He has provided.

## Grace Is Experienced Through the Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the administrator of the realities of Christ in our lives. He takes what Christ has accomplished and makes it experiential in our walk. Living in the Spirit therefore requires cooperation with Him—when He leads, we must follow; when He instructs, we must obey; when He corrects, we must respond.

The problem is not that God's grace is insufficient. The problem is often that we resist the wisdom and direction through which that grace is expressed. Grace is freely given, but walking in its experience requires a responsive heart.

## The Word Reveals the Grace of God

The grace of God is made known to us through His Word—what Paul called "the word of his grace" (Acts 20:32). It reveals our identity, our inheritance, God's provision, His will, and how we are to live. But revelation must become understanding, and understanding must become practice. The Holy Spirit takes the truth revealed in Scripture and brings us into its practical application.

## Growing in Grace Through Knowledge

Peter writes, *"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ"* (2 Peter 3:18). We grow in grace as we grow in the knowledge of Christ—not because God's grace increases, but because our experience and appropriation of it increases. The more we know Christ, the more accurately we can walk in the reality of what He has accomplished.

## Everything We Need Has Already Been Given

Peter also declares that God's *"divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him"* (2 Peter 1:3). The question is not "Has God given me enough?" but "Do I understand what He has given, and am I walking in it?" What has been given must be received, and receiving requires spiritual perception—learning to see according to the truth of God's Word rather than natural reasoning.

## Receiving Grace and Reigning in Life

Paul gives us the picture in Romans 5:17: those *"which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ."* Grace has been abundantly supplied, but we must receive it. This is the essence of living in the Spirit—not producing by human effort what God has already provided by grace, but learning to receive, understand, and walk in what Christ has accomplished.

## Living in the Reality of Grace

The Christian life is not merely about knowing that grace exists—it is about walking in its reality. The Word reveals it. Spiritual understanding perceives it. The Holy Spirit leads us into it. Our obedience allows us to cooperate with it. As we walk in the Spirit, what God has provided in Christ becomes increasingly experiential in our daily lives.

God's grace is already abundant toward us in Christ. We do not need to persuade God to become gracious toward us; we need to learn how to live in the reality of the grace already given. This is why we must give ourselves to the Word, develop spiritual understanding, maintain fellowship with the Holy Spirit, and respond to His leading.

Grace has provided. The Word reveals. Spiritual understanding perceives. The Holy Spirit leads. Faith receives. Obedience walks it out.

This is living in the Spirit.
